Key Stage 2

Age Range: 7 to 11
Year Group: 3 to 6

In Years 3 to 6 more specialist teaching occurs across the curriculum, including Music, PE and Games. Children begin to learn Polish and French in Year 3. The National Curriculum continues to be followed on a broad basis, although teachers challenge children further. The introduction of homework ensures that children become accustomed to the idea of independent study and the taking of personal responsibility.

Key Stage 2 is a four year programme covering Years 3-6 in the Junior School. The objectives of this Key Stage are:

  • To ensure a smooth transition from whole class teaching in Key Stage 1 to some specialist teaching in Key Stage 2 and on to full specialist teaching at Key Stage 3.
  • To introduce students to a broader range of subjects based on those already introduced at Key Stage 1.
  • To extend the challenges offered and the demands to be faced as new knowledge and skills are introduced.
  • To encourage the development of learning skills and the ability to research, apply and interpret appropriate knowledge and information sources.
  • To continue emphasising the basic skills in literacy, numeracy and science.
  • To improve the communication skills of all pupils, particularly through the use of media.
  • To advance the pupil's cultural sensitivity towards, and moral and ethical understanding of, our social and cultural milieu.
  • To encourage each pupil to contribute positively to the school community and to become an active participant in all areas of school life.
  • To ensure that physical, moral, social, and emotional aspects of a pupil's development are encouraged and expanded.
